Barns Courtney announces new album 404

Barns Courtney has announced his second studio album '404'.

The British star's follow-up to his critically-acclaimed debut 'The Attractions of Youth' is named after the 404 error code you get on a computer when a web browser connects to a server but the page is unable to be viewed.

Barns returned to his roots for the record and penned songs about "how we lose ourselves as we age" and the "existential authenticity" crisis we are facing the in the digital age.

Speaking on the album's inspiration, he said: “The album circulates around the themes of existential authenticity, and how we lose ourselves as we age. A 404 error is when a computer can’t find what it’s looking for. It connects with the server but the page isn’t there anymore. As a child of the digital age, the comparison felt apt. And although in some ways, our former lives still exist inside of us, they’re ultimately hollow shells of what they once were, living breathing experiences. We can follow the links to our past, but there’s nothing there. It’s a painful realisation and one that fascinated me whilst writing the record in my friends’ old bedroom in the backwaters of Yaxley where we first started almost 10 years ago.”

'404' is unique in that Barns decided to record the songs in one take in the middle of the night, enabling him to give his most raw performance to date.

Barns - who has previously supported the likes of The Who, Blur, The Libertines and Ed Sheeran - is also set to embark on a headline tour in the UK and Europe this autumn.

The string of shows will kick off in Manchester on October 8 and wrap in London at Electric Ballroom on October 23, before heading off to Europe.

'404' is released on September 6th via Virgin EMI.
