"Covid-19 might have brought a storm, but Katy Perry's here with the rainbow and an endless pot of solid pop gold."
If there's a song on 'Smile' that sums up Perry's return to form, it's 'Resilient'; "Look at me now I’m in full bloom... look at me now I light up the room," she belts.
Following a blip with 2017's 'Witness', the 'Teenage Dream' hitmaker is having her "full flower moment" on her new studio album.
For her rebirth, Perry has followed in the footsteps of her pop peers Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa, putting a 21st-century spin on that classic disco sound on call-to-the-dancefloor anthems such as the firecracker 'Champagne Problems’ - an ode to the "dirty work” she and future husband, Orlando Bloom, have put into their romance - and playful party-starter 'Tucked', on which Perry let's her fantasises run wild.
'Harleys In Hawaii' is another injection of the fun, flirtatious Perry, as her 'I Kissed a Girl' and 'California Gurls' era comes out to play.
But between the uplifting EDM-pop, Perry - who is due to give birth to her first child with Bloom any second now - is the most honest, candid, and introspective she's ever been during her pop career. After a euphoric ride, closer 'What Makes a Woman' is a moving celebration of womanhood and not giving “a f***” what anyone else thinks.
At the end of the record, Perry - whose real name is Kathryn Elizabeth Hudson - tells herself in response to her own question she asks in the title of the song: "There it is, Kathryn."
Let's not forget, Perry went through a severe boat of depression after the release of 'Witness' and a split from 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor Bloom.
And resilience and navigating her way through life's uphill battles is at the core of ‘Smile’.
