Tipped as 'one to watch' by Lizzie's Lowdown last year, Maddy Storm is known for her boundary-blurring blend of gritty electropop.
For her latest single, 'Sleep Deprived', the DYI artist self-produced arguably her most raw and vulnerable cut to date, on which she declares: "I'm scared of myself."
The introspective sad-pop banger - which Storm quipped is best served with a margarita over ice - begins with a robotic space-like sonic, before the artist's instantly-recognisable pop vocal takes charge.
On the meaning of the song, Storm said: “It is partly me airing my dirty laundry in public, I’m questioning my self-worth and relatability. I never thought I’d feel confident enough to say that 'I’m scared of myself' in a song but I always stand by the process that the hardest songs to write are the ones worth writing. It captures how uncertain I felt in that moment and there are questions within the song that I’m still figuring out.”
Lockdown has seen artists getting experimental with creating music at home and Storm has revealed that: “The vocal textures at the start of the track were actually recorded through my
‘Sleep Deprived’ follows recent singles ‘The Art of Giving Up’ and ‘Dizzying Heights’, and fans can expect plenty of new material from Storm in the coming months.
