Morrissey announces covers LP featuring duet with Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong

Morrissey has announced the new covers LP 'California Son'.

The former Smiths frontman has put his spin on some 60s' and 70s' classics, including the soul ballad 'Wedding Bell Blues' featuring Green Day's Bille Joe Armstrong - who has long cited Moz as a hero - and Lydia Night of California punk rock band The Regrettes.

The first taste of the album comes in the form of the Roy Orbison cover 'It’s Over', which features American singer/songwriter LP, and has been given the seal of approval of the late 'Pretty Woman' hitmaker's son, Roy Orbison Jr.

Listen to 'It's Over:

The 48-year-old musician went as far as to say Morrissey reminds him of his late dad.

He commented: "We love Morrissey! Morrissey's hair, and melancholy and poetic lyrics always reminded me of my Dad. His version of 'It’s Over' is great."

Whilst LP - who has co-written hits for the likes of Cher, Rihanna and the Backstreet Boys - added: "When I would think of Morrisey and his music it was always with great respect and appreciation as I’m sure is the case with many of his fans.

"However, I soon realised when I hung out with him and he played me all the songs he was putting on this record that behind this was the heart of an audiophile and a deep fan of his own musical heroes.

"He is well versed in so many genres and knows deep cuts of artists I thought I knew so much about.

"It is inspiring to see the enthusiasm and intellect he brings to people through his own musical journey."

'California Son' is released on May 24th via Morrissey's very own Etienne label, an imprint of BMG.
